Welcome

Although the South Burnaby Metro Club has been dedicated to the youth of our community since 1952, our basketball program is only in its thirteenth year of operation. On most Saturday evenings, October to March, 650 of Burnaby's youth will be found at the Bonsor Community Center or the Burnaby South HS gyms playing basketball in a safe, friendly environment.

Lexi Der Named to the U17 Womens National Team

2010 U13 Girls Club Championship Results

South Burnaby's U13 Girls have captured their first Div A Provincial Championship since 1999. This comes after several years of near misses when SBMC finished in second place from 2006 to 2008. It also marks the second time that the Eagles have swept both the Boys & Girls titles in the same year. The girls made short work of 3D and TCYBA in the preliminary round but had to come from behind in the last seconds to defeat South Langley in the semi finals. Lauren Bondi played a major role in the comeback win, scoring 10 of her team high 12 points in the pivotal fourth quarter. The Championship Final was a four point game at the half but South Burnaby pulled away from 3D to win the title 44 to 27. The Club's girls metro league team competed in the Club Championships B Division where they finished in seventh place with a 1 & 2 record.

2010 U13 Boys Club Championship Results

For the third time in five seasons, the Burnaby Eagles have captured the Division A provincial title at the Steve Nash U13 Club Championship Tournament. This capped an undefeated 23 win season against Canadian competition and an overall record of 27 & 4 including tournament games against Washington State AAU teams. SBMC's other entries also had great tournaments. Although the Stars suffered a heart breaking last second loss in their semi final match to the RBL Ballers, the eventual B Division Champions, they did rebound to claim third place. The Hornets started slowly against North Langley but then found their stride with 2 wins and an overtime loss to finish sixth. The Raptors ended up playing 6 games and made it all the way to the C Division championship game.

The 13th Annual Metropolis Classic wasn't as well attended as in previous years with several teams dropping out late and SBMC having to fill in the gaps with additional house league all-star teams. The South Burnaby Selects easily won the A Division while the Stars lost to 3D Elite in the B Division Championship game.

2010 Burnaby/New West High School Team Results

Congratulations to the Burnaby South Rebels & Byrne Creek Bulldogs Senior Boys basketball teams for both qualifying for the AAA Championship. This is the first time since 1978 that two Burnaby public school teams have made it to the show in the same year. South went 3 & 2 to finish 8th while Byrne was 1 & 2, good enough for 11th place. Another record of sorts for Burnaby/New West was that Burnaby South boys teams also competed in the three other age classification Provincial Tournaments. The grade 8's lost in the Championship game to Vancouver College, the grade 9's played one game before withdrawing with 5 or 6 other schools due to the tournament not being properly sanctioned and the juniors finished in 8th place. The New Westminster and STM senior girls grabbed 7th place in the AAA's and 10th place at the AA's respectively. The New Westminster junior boys joined South in Victoria and finished 12th. The STM grade 8 girls finished 7th at Pitt Meadows. The following current or former Burnaby Eagles were on the teams:

Burnaby South Grade 8's (2nd place): Martin Bogajev, Marcus Cartagena, Kevin Fraser, Zlatan Jovanovic, Josh Lovendino, Ahmed Nizamani, Djordje Obradovic, Marko Pantic, Milos Savic, Taylor Smith & Brett Timewell.
Burnaby South Grade 9's (DNF): Shaun Burns, Alex Bott, Blake Hogg, Milos Lazic, Dejan Posavljak & Matt Shannik.
Burnaby South Grade 10's (8th place): George Kovac, Marrion Nzuzzi, Tim Kim, Alex Kim, Brandon Lo, JC Pineda, Goran Peric, Andrew Yang & Quentin Nguyen.
Burnaby South AAA Senior Boys (8th place): Nick Irvine, Mukhraj Dosanjh, Lazar Cuk, JoJo Kibangula, Ricky Manhas, Thomas Schmidt, Daniel Edwards, Jok Malek & Ater Degal.

U13 & U15 House League Champions

This season's U13 playoffs had a touch of March madness to them in that there were two major upsets the first weekend of play. The Raptors and Tropics which had finished second and third in the standings were both dispatched in narrow losses to lower seeded teams. The Suns captured the U13 Championship with a 48 to 44 victory over the previously unbeaten Rebels. They had earlier defeated the Tropics 48 to 45 and Cavs 55 to 40 to qualify for the finals. The U15 Championship went to the Rockets with playoff wins over the Spartans 62 to 50, the Bruins 58 to 34 and finally the Warriors 50 to 37. Congratulations to all players and coaches for another successful season.

U13 Metro League Results

The U13 Selects completed another undefeated Metro League regular season but this year managed to win the playoff championship as well. The team completely dominated Drive in the first quarter of the final game, jumping out to a 32 to 6 lead and then cruising to a 67 to 51 victory. The SBMC Stars had a more difficult season, winning just two games after being promoted to the League's A Division. The U13 girl's team which competed in the Metro League was actually South Burnaby's B team and they had an excellent season going 6 & 6 before losing out in the first round of the playoffs.
Metro League

V & D High School Champions

The Burnaby South Rebels won the Vancouver & District Junior Boys Championship for the second year in a row and will most likely be seeded in the top five for the Provincial Tournament. It is also a repeat for many of the players on the squad as they had won the 2009 Juvenile V & D title as grade 9's. Nine of the players are former Burnaby Eagles and acted as assistant coaches in our U11 boys division this season.

Ferndale (Dylan Crayton Memorial) Tournament

Only the U14 team participated in this year's tournament as the U11 & U13 Selects were scared off by the anticipated border traffic for the Olympic Games. The team had been selected as a Burnaby South grade 8 squad this season and this was the fourth and last American tournament prior to the Vancouver & District and Provincial High School Championships. The boys didn't disappoint as they had a great tournament finishing with a 3 & 1 record.

Clinton & Morley Elementary School Donations

The Burnaby Eagles donated portable score clocks to the Clinton and Morley Elementary Schools in appreciation for all the gym time they have supplied our program the past several years. Without the assistance of the local schools we would be unable to ensure that all the teams have weekly practice allotments.

HSBC Basketball Classic

The Burnaby Eagles U13 girl's team went undefeated to capture the Elementary Division of the 10th Annual HSBC Basketball Classic. SBMC opened with a 78 to 8 blow out over False Creek and followed up with a 38 to 16 victory over RBL to qualify for the Championship Game. The finals were more competitive and the Eagles prevailed 48 to 36 over the 3D Elite for the title.

The Burnaby South Senior boy's team (10 former Burnaby Eagles) defeated Gleneagles 80 to 69 to take 3rd place in the High School Division. They had earlier posted wins over Port Moody 73 - 43, Tamanawis 82 - 71 and St Georges 77 - 66 before falling 66 - 55 in the semis to the White Rock Christian Academy, the eventual Tournament Champions. South's Ater Degal and Nick Irvine were selected as two of the ten tournament all-stars.
